From our friends in SalesOnline:

According to an OECD report for 2006 to 2007, Ireland had the biggest increase in broadband penetration among 30 OECD countries. This is a very encouraging trend but we are only finally catching up and broadband penetration is still quite low at around 16.35% of the total Irish population.

Lack of penetration is more due to the archaic infrastructure and the inability to switch providers without going through an onerous fiasco of down-time and disruption.

Ireland's speeds are also pretty shocking compared to our European counterparts. As BT are starting to upgrade their "Option 3" or "Heavy" use customers to 8MB we're moving in the right direction but ask any Swedish person and they'll tell you that this is still slow compared to their standards.

We're moving in the right direction but the pace is almost stationary.
